Hot Issues in Labor Regulations or What to Avoid in the Labor Code

The Romanian Labor Code, entered into force into 1st of March 2003 and already created lot of controversies on the market. It was considered by employers sometimes as worst as the precedent code, which came into force during the communist regime.
Before anything, two things can be said about this law: it is far from being a real codex, as it does not contain (yet) all the relevant pieces of legislation for the labor relations. The second statement was made previously in many occasions but we have to repeat it: the law is overprotecting with the workers and it is, ultimately, a rigid law. In general, rigid things are easier to brake, if they do not match the real life requirements. However, this is not necessary in case of the Labor Law. Romania is currently seen as a real estate bonanza but are things as beautiful as they look? The answer is not simple but the old investors saying – “there are no opportunities without risks” – does apply to Romania.

Prices for properties, almost everywhere in Romania, are increasing at a very fast pace and the return on investment is, accordingly, at high levels. This trend was strong over the last years and it was fuelled mainly by high demand for residential and commercial facilities. Another reason lies in an apparent lack of land suitable for such projects. What is missing is in fact is good quality information about the properties ready for sale, especially inside the cities.
